Leaking information

Mega-leaks by WikiLeaks: First it was the Afghan War Diary. Then it was the Iraq War Logs. Now it is Secret US Embassy Cables.

These and the thousands of other otherwise unpublished documents “leaked” by WikiLeaks have generated strong reactions both for and against the award wining, new media nonprofit organization.

  1. I think wikileaks team have gone too far. We need to ask larger question” what is the real intention or objective of such leaks”.We cannot afford to bring out all back door diplomacy to public domain. Such leaks only makes futre delaings among countries more difficult and suspicious.I don’t think the world will be better off after these massive leaks. If so i would support. On the contrary, we know irreparable fall outs from the diplomatic cable laeks.

    Why Wikileaks expose is GOOD?

It unravels the dirt swept under the rug, the sham of US foreign policy, the indigestible truth of a nation’s hypocrisy and more than that – it opens up a can of secret worms.

If media is a true watch dog – it must keep a close eye on the system that has a tendency to be corrupt. Media must ensure “transparency and accountability” by reporting issues, even of this magnitude, in the public forum.

The US has started witch hunt – Mr Assange will be vulnerable to numerous tactics of the US state.

The expose has brought to light an “inconvenient truth” of American policies, and diplomats. The world must be wary!

This is the true freedom of media. An example worthy of emulation. Media anywhere must bring out the ‘dirt of the system’ into the open.

    Why the Wikileaks is BAD?

What method did Wikileak use to get the information. Was it ethical journalism? If the information was obtained through a proper journalistic manner – an unknown source – well and good! There is a need to protect the sources now – more so because the witch hunt has started!

Internationally, the reactions of leaders across the world have not been good. Obviously, every one would be snubbed by ‘funny’ comments passed by a smiling diplomat in a wolve’s coat. But international relations again mean serious business – spats of this kind keep happening!

If you’ve watch the National Geographic Documentary on Wikileaks entitled ‘Inside Wikileaks’, it is apparent that the course of action they’ve taken is not an overnight decision but one that is carefully thought out, planned and executed with a motive that government information are public domain and it is the right of every citizen to know about it or in other words that forms the basis of the ‘Right to Information’.

  4. In a knowledge-based society information plays a key role and the controversies surrounding Wikileaks are the testimony in itself. Information, if used properly can enhance and enrich societies; it can create a vibrant democracy, which is just and transparent and vice-versa otherwise. For Wikileaks case, I feel that the negative criticisms are only the arguments of those in power. Many experts believe that it is more of embarrassment then a real threat.

More importantly it shows the advancement of human civilization. We are in an era of digital age, where every thing happens in a virtual world. The so-called cyber wars fought from the comfort of ones bedrooms using laptops and PCs as warriors deadliest weapon between pro Wikileaks (operation payback) and against Wikileaks (operation fight back) proves the power of technology that are around us. With few clicks online systems, power-grids and communication systems can go down, bank accounts can be wiped off completely and the list goes on… Therefore it is important that we even as a small country should take note of such happenings and better prepare ourselves to protect against those threats.

  5. What Wikileaks does is commendable and striking. It promotes transparency and accountability in the light of many mysteries and conspiracies surrounding diplomacy and foreign relations. By leaking true documents, it not only gives people a flavor of how international relations works in fact but also prevents leaders and pundits from bamboozling people by making false promises. In the recent material leaked, it was revealed that Arab countries requested US to bombard possible sites in Iran which are deemed occupied for the production of WMDs. And now let’s say that the United States has bombarded those WMD producing sites in Iran expecting that everything will come to an end once it is bombarded. But imagine again that it didn’t turn out as U.S expected, and Iran’s nuclear partner North Korea backed Iran with nukes and Iran retaliated by waging war on US. Like this, it won’t take long for countries to spawn an all-out war, probably the third world war. How many wars and skirmishes would have been prevented if we had something like wikileaks? We would have prevented two tormenting world wars of humanity and saved lives of tens of millions of innocent people lost under the hands of tyrants like Stalin and Hitler; many countries back then signed non-binding secret treatises, thereby betraying partners.

We would have prevented U.S interventionism in Iraq if something like Wikileaks had uncovered from an Iraqi legation elsewhere proclaiming the nonexistence of nukes. We could have saved lives of too many Iraqi civilians and US soldiers. When it was crystal clear that almost all Al Qaeda hijackers for 9/11 and Pentagon attacks were from Saudi Arabia, the US and NATO forces intervened in Afghanistan under the pretext of hunting Osama whose whereabouts is still unknown. Why did they do so? Something is missing here! In the recent leak, it was found that Obama administration’s main focus is on China because of myriad issues like arms sales to Taiwan and the currency war between two super powers. When the global community knows the truth, people will keep an eye on those countries deemed important in geopolitics, thereby restraining countries from resorting to unreasonable policies.

Threatening international relations and regional secuirty? Of course it will! It will undoubtedly sour relations between different countries. But such esoteric and bellicose proposals, if left shrouded, would spur unimaginable consequences in the long run. So, the upsides of leaking archives far outnumber the downsides.

Diplomats, char•gés d’affaires and the like, however, have these “immunities and privileges.” So, acts like espionage, tresspassing into diplomatic premises, bugging and leaking archives would be deemed menacing in the eyes of a diplomat.

  6. I think wikileaks has shown the limitations of the mainstream media and offers the people a direct access to the documents that make the news instead of journalists analyzing it for us.
wikileaks will change journalism and also the definition of the internet.
wikileaks is controversial for letting everything out some of which could compromise good relations or even the safety of some individuals in war torn countries.

how the larger good is that this is the next level transparency which is increasingly being demanded from governments beacuse world over including in Bhutan they make a lot of mistakes and then under the guise of national security, interest and etc hide their mistakes committed by individuals in the govt. The cost of which ordinary people like us keep paying.

8. If there was transparency in the first place, there was no need for such reports. Whether it was leaked or not, it would have made no difference. Because of two mouths, this is now seen as a security problem? In a similar context, if our government is clear in its thinking and action, there is nothing to worry. If you tell a lie, thousands lie will not cover it. To tell the truth will require much shorter time than telling a lie. You don’t have to remember when you tell the truth. Just try out. However, WikiLeaks, in my opinion has gone too far. It’s like blackmailing countries???

  9. I think there is both and bad points;

As far as exposing corruption I am all for it, but sometimes he crosses the line by exposing oeverly sensitive informations.

I think he should concentrate more on exposing corruption, and briberies.

For example, now people might be scared to be more transparent, the Canadian Ambassador to Afghanisthan is resigning because he said Afghan president is corrupt, they also exposed some likely terrorist targets.

  10. True Dukpa says:

Whatever we argue against or for, it is just a matter of waiting now, the Wikileak’s endeavor continues to unfold hundreds and thousands of documents every day and just day before yesterday it is reported that some 2200 plus cable documents on Nepal is expected to release in coming two weeks and, the release is reported to include Bhutan-Nepal bilateral ties, among others. Even earlier release on Southeast Asian countries; India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan makes references to Bhutan. So, there is going to be more.

  11. Puran Gurung says:

Leaking of information? I had to scratch my stupid head to make sense out of it. I asked if leaking of information means an overflow or like a puncture in a Tyre? Both seems to fill the connotation yet why should it be called “leaking of information?” Are we so into secularization and isolation? No, we are not, we are all socializing lately.

I as a student of Journalism and fond of such hidden vessels, that sometimes are very much sought after must meet our blood. This light Era is slated as AGE OF COMMUNICATION, and why should anything hinder its flow?

One half of the world should know what the other half of the world is doing, it closes the gap. We are very much inching to the defined world of communication.

Every doctrine of Journalism in any part of the world shouldn’t meet with any form of constriction. Every law is encoded with freedom of speech yet it eludes the very soul of humans when one is referred in it.
News in its truest form enlightens men. If it was not to the benefits of News, men would not come together for any cause. Now who really needs a place of privacy? It is an ear-play, comes into one and leaves through the other, some remains though.

After every story, unveiling of the suspense is the most beautiful thrill. Duality truly exists, in name only does most of the things exist, it is never developed into the world, it takes the birth but remains sleeping.

Afghan war diary has been the most fascinating and thrilling part of read in my life. Who wouldn’t be ever interested in such material that consists 91,731 documents and the man behind it or men? It has provoked a refined hopes and inspirations in me. The submerged will as an ember has lighted into fire. I still remember so clearly the sufferings and slain of innocents, the plans devised and every architecture is so a master plan. It almost flown me some where in my dreams of becoming missionary and table turning photographer, I know I will realize these dreams. The world is a good place to conquer and experience and being a reporter is the most exclusive manning.

Reading Holy wars, The pearl harbor war and attack on Japan, about the reign of Victorian age shines as news still for news is something new, and it is new for the posterity, it will always hold the news value. Dianel pearl case rest pounding in my heart, it attacks me offhand, my pen shivers yet I am under no illusion that truth must be human’s priority.

Wiki is one of the biggest source of such kinds. It has been manned by fearless souls and they must exist to create awareness so to halt devils at work. They are creating great forums for reporters and we shall await those glory days.

Now I must surf the channels that is blabbing in the idiot box!!!
